I haven’t blogged for a few months, I know. However I came across a syndrome that took my interest. Interesting enough to want to do a little research and share it with the handful of readers that follow my blog.
This fascinating syndome is
also known as
Genital Retraction Syndrome (GRS)
According to wikipedia, Koro is a culture-bound syndrome delusional disorder in which an individual has an overpowering belief that one’s sex organs are retracting and will disappear, despite the lack of any true longstanding changes to the genitals. Koro is also known as shrinking penis, and it is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koro_(medicine))
Although the syndrome is described as being culture-bound there are cases throughout the world and is not only exclusive to men.
Treatment for Koro syndrome includes talk therapy and antidepressants.
“In China, traditional treatment based on the causes suggested by cultural beliefs are administrated to the patient. Praying to gods and asking Taoist priests to perform exorcism is common. If a fox spirit is believed to be involved, people may hit gongs or beat the person to drive it out. The person will receive a yang- or yin-augmenting Chinese medicine potion…” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koro_(medicine))
